Jeweller added to australian
apprenticeship priority list

21 January 2026

We are pleased to advise that Jeweller has been included on the Australian Apprenticeships Priority List, effective 1 January 2026.

This recognition by the Australian Government reflects the ongoing skills shortage across the jewellery trade and acknowledges the importance of building a sustainable workforce for the future of our industry. It is also a natural progression following the inclusion of Jeweller on the Occupation Shortage List in late 2025, and reflects sustained advocacy by the JAA alongside other industry bodies to highlight workforce challenges facing the sector.

The Priority List for Jeweller includes four qualifications - Certificate III in Jewellery Manufacture, Certificate IV in Advanced Jewellery Manufacture, Diploma of Jewellery and Object Design, and Advanced Diploma of Jewellery and Object Design.

What does this mean for employers?

Inclusion on the Priority List means that employers who engage a jeweller apprentice may be eligible to access a range of government supports and incentives under the Australian Apprenticeships Incentive System, subject to eligibility requirements. These can include:

  • Priority hiring incentives to help offset the cost of employing and training an apprentice
  • Support payments for apprentices, which can assist with retention and completion
  • Access to the Australian Apprenticeships Support Network (AASN), providing practical assistance with recruitment, contracts, compliance and navigating available incentives

These measures are designed to make it easier for businesses to take on apprentices and invest in skills development, while helping address workforce shortages across the trade.

Eligibility and incentive amounts depend on factors such as the type of apprenticeship, commencement date and employer circumstances. Employers are encouraged to seek tailored advice to understand what support may be available to them.

Apprentices may also be eligible for incentives through Living Away From Home Allowance, Youth Allowance and Austudy payments.

The JAA has been engaging with government on skills and workforce issues and welcomes this important development for the industry. We will continue to keep members informed as further guidance and details become available.

If you would like more information or assistance in understanding how this may apply to your business, please contact the JAA.
