Erin Pearce: Pushing Boundaries in Metal
2023 JAA Australasian Jewellery Awards | Precious Metal Winner

In the world of jewellery design, there are those who simply create beautiful pieces, and then there are those who elevate the craft to a whole new level. With her artistic flair, keen eye for detail, and uncompromising commitment to quality, Erin Pearce has quickly emerged as a hot talent in the industry.

But who is Erin Pearce? Born and raised in Sydney, Australia, Pearce's journey into the world of jewellery making began over 20 years ago during her high school years. It was here that she discovered her passion for working with precious metals and gemstones. After pursuing a degree in Fine Arts at university, Pearce honed her skills in the jewellery trade, gaining valuable experience in wholesale and production.

In 2016, Pearce made the decision to pursue her dream even further by undertaking an apprenticeship. This marked a turning point in her career, as she delved deeper into the art and craftsmanship of jewellery making.

However, it was not until the onset of the global pandemic in 2020 that Pearce truly found her stride. With the world in lockdown, she made the bold decision to quit her job and focus on her true passion full-time. It was during this time that Mill Foundry was officially launched, becoming a symbol of perseverance and determination in the face of adversity.

Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, Pearce's talent and creativity only shone brighter. As lockdowns began to ease, she took the opportunity to join forces with The Bench, Sydney – a community of talented jewellers. Here, she not only found a supportive network of like-minded artists but also started teaching regular classes, where she could share her knowledge and passion for jewellery making.

For Pearce, jewellery is more than just an accessory. It is a medium through which she celebrates form and function within sculptural design. Her designs are inspired by mid-century modernist artists, particularly Margel Hinder and Marianne Brandt. Through her work, Pearce continues conversations, elevates the voices of female creatives, and seeks to learn and grow with each piece she creates.

As Erin continues to rise in the world of jewellery design, it is clear that she is destined for great things. Her passion, talent, and unwavering dedication to her craft make her a force to be reckoned with. Whether it is through her awe-inspiring creations or her role as a mentor, Pearce is leaving an indelible mark on the industry. As we eagerly await her next masterpiece, one thing is certain – Erin Pearce is an artist to watch, and her journey is only just beginning.

She recently made waves in the industry by winning the prestigious Precious Metal category in the JAA Australasian Jewellery Awards. This recognition not only solidified her position in the industry but also opened doors for her to further explore the fascinating intersection of light, colour, and metal manipulation. With a desire to push boundaries and expand her skills, Pearce's journey as an artist is nothing short of inspiring.

Pearce's passion for her craft was evident early on in her apprenticeship, where she had the fortune of working under a supportive boss who encouraged her to enter awards. This experience allowed her to create pieces that stretched her own design boundaries and refined her manufacturing skills. Encouraging others to follow suit, Pearce believes that participating in such events not only helps artists grow but also allows them the freedom to create without the constraints of a client's specifications.

It is this hunger for creative freedom that led Pearce to enter the JAA Awards, a highly respected platform in the industry. Her submission showcased her adeptness at manipulating metal to create stunning visual effects through the interplay of light and colour. The judges were captivated by her innovative approach, awarding her the much-coveted prize.

The recognition and praise Pearce has received fuels her determination to continue pushing the boundaries of her artistry. With an eye on the future, Pearce eagerly anticipates the next JAA Awards, scheduled for 2025.

While her recent success has undoubtedly bolstered her confidence, Pearce remains humble and rooted in her love for her craft. For her, art is about constant growth and exploration — a relentless pursuit of pushing the boundaries of what is possible. She sees her creations as a reflection of her ever-evolving skills and desires to inspire others to embark on their own creative journeys.

As she continues to perfect her skills, Pearce aims to broaden the reach of her business and inspire fellow artists to embrace experimentation and risk-taking. Her accolades serve as a testament to the power of pushing boundaries and the impact it can have on one's artistic journey.

Her ability to manipulate metal and play with light and colour has captivated both judges and her peers. A determination to push boundaries and a passion for storytelling through her creations, Pearce is poised to make even greater strides in the industry. Watch out for her in the coming years, as she continues to leave her mark and inspire others to embrace their creative potential.
