National Measurement Institute

The National Measurement Institute (NMI) conducts audits of jewellery retailers and wholesaler who trade in precious metals and gemstones.

The NMI is Australia’s peak measurement organisation, a division of the Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research in the Australian Government.

The NMI is responsible for maintaining the primary standards of measurement and providing the legal and technical framework for the dissemination of measurement standards.

Any transaction, whether retail or wholesale, involving precious stones or metals is deemed to be a trade transaction if the purpose is:

  • buying and selling of items, or
  • valuation of items

Even though a number of other factors may be involved in the buying, selling or valuation of a piece of jewellery, such as metal purity, colour, link type, workmanship, rarity or popularity of design, if a measuring instrument is used, its use must comply with trade measurement laws.

The JAA recommends for those members who trade in precious stones and metal to check their scales meet the NMI requirements and ensure appropriate maintenance of scales.
